Sydney Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia. Melbourne Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia. It is a leading financial centre in Australia, as well as the Asia-Pacific region, and has been ranked the world's most liveable city since 2011. An international centre for performing and visual arts, Melbourne is often referred to as Australia's cultural capital. It is the birthplace of Australian dance styles; the Melbourne Shuffle and New Vogue, the Australian film industry (including the world's first feature film), Australian impressionist art (known as the Heidelberg School), Australian rules football, and the Australian television industry. Melbourne has a moderate oceanic climate and is well known for its changeable weather conditions. Universities Melbourne is the home of seven public universities in order of rank:
Brisbane Brisbane is the capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Queensland,and the third most populous city in Australia. Brisbane's metropolitan area has a population of 2.24 million. Brisbane has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and dry moderately warm winter. From November to March, thunderstorms are common over Brisbane, with the more severe events accompanied by large damaging hail stones, torrential rain and destructive winds. Universities There are seven public universities based in Brisbane:
Gold Coast The Gold Coast is a coastal city in south-eastern Queensland on the east coast of Australia. The city is 94 kilometres (58 mi) south of the state capital Brisbane. It is the second most populous city in the state, the sixth most populous city in the country, and the most populous non-capital city in Australia. The Gold Coast is today a major tourist destination with its sunny subtropical climate, surfing beaches, canal and waterway systems, its high-rise dominated skyline, theme parks, nightlife, and rainforest hinterland, making tourism one of its most significant industries. Gold Coast will host the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Universities There are two universities based in Gold Coast:
Perth Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia (WA). It is the fourth most populous city in Australia, with an estimated population of 1.97 million. Perth receives moderate though highly seasonal rainfall, making it the fourth wettest Australian capital city after Darwin, Sydney and Brisbane. Summers are generally very hot and dry, lasting from December to late March, with February generally being the hottest month of the year, while winters are relatively mild and wet.
